Boys and Girls Club Garden

It was a sunny Saturday morning (May 31) when members of the Post Falls Kiwanis Club met Kelli Gardner (former Key Clubber, scholarship recipient, and recent graduate from U of I) at the Boys & Girls Club in Post Falls to establish a garden as a project for the kids of the club this summer.

Kelli and other staff will be working with the kids on growing plants from seed, care and maintenance of the garden, and then food preparation later on this summer.

Thanks to Richard Shutts for heading up the work party and donating the 10 bags of compost.

We will continue to update the progress on this worthwhile project.

Flamingo Fundraiser kicks off

In a perfect April Fool’s gesture, Mayor Ron Jacobson of Post Falls woke up to a pink flurry of flamingos on his front lawn this morning. The flamingos, in their innaugural flocking for 2014, arrived by way of some mischievous Post Falls Kiwanians in an effort to raise money with a little humor in support of kids’ programs and scholarships in the community.

This is not an all legs and no brains project, but a way to tickle your non-feathered friends. For a donation of only $20 – $50, you can have a friend or family member of your choice wake up to a flock of flamingos in their front yard. What better way to celebrate the arrival of spring and the end of the “endless winter blues” than with a flock of bright pink birds decorating your neighbor’s lawn for a day! The flockings will continue through the month of April.

All proceeds benefit children’s programs in the community. Last year, the Post Falls Kiwanis Club raised $1500 that was used to purchase gloves for the elementary school kids in Post Falls School District 273. The gloves are distributed between the schools to teachers who identify the kids that need them.

In addition to our annual gloves program, the Post Falls Kiwanis Club gave $5600 in scholarships to Post Falls college-bound high school students, approximately $3000 to community and children-oriented projects, as well as club-member time and energy donated to many other programs and organizations.

To join in the fun and flock someone, forms are available at pfkiwanis@gmail.com, Community First Bank in Post Falls, or you can download one from our website at http://www.pfkiwanis.wordpress.com. For more information call Steve at 208-661-7870.

Bat Condos

Headed up by our own Paul Ferguson and John Damazio, several of our fellow Kiwanians gathered at the Damazio shop to build specialized bat condominiums that will house about 200 bats. Then the seven bat condos the group made were presented to the Fish and Game Department to be installed in strategic parts of the forest to help the bat population.

Pictured below are Dave Spraul, Andy Reese, John Damazio, and Jack Oselinsky working on the condos. The bat condos all lined up. And the presentation to Panhandle Fish and Game Department Volunteer Coordinator, Pete Gardner who is pictured with Steve Slaney, Paul Ferguson, (Pete), Dave Spraul, John Damazio, and Andy Reese.
